Reduce Home Allergies this Spring with These HVAC Tips

No Extra Fees for Evenings or Weekends
|

Spring is allergy season - but if you're one of the 50 million Americans with seasonal allergies, you don't have to suffer from itchy eyes or a stuffy nose in your home. Proper HVAC maintenance can greatly reduce allergy symptoms by removing and keeping out common allergens like mold, pollen and dust mites. Try these four tips to keep you breathing easy.

1. Invest in high-quality air filters

Air filters are the main line of defense when it comes to indoor air quality. Filters are measured by MERVs, the level of particle filtration, with a 20 rating being the highest. Look for a filter with at least a MERV 8 rating so that it will trap smaller particles. Check filters monthly and replace them at least every three months.

2.Clean your outdoor unit

The HVAC unit pulls air from outside that will circulate throughout your home. Clear away any dirt, debris or dust around the unit as often as possible so that allergens aren't brought inside. For an extra clean, vacuum and sweep around your indoor unit too.

3. Dust your vents

Dust mites are a common indoor allergen, so reducing dust around the house will help relieve allergy symptoms. Clean your registers and return vents first - if they have dust on them, it will circulate throughout your home. When cleaning, use a damp rag to prevent kicking up particles into the air.

4. Schedule an HVAC maintenance appointment

Spring is the perfect time for a seasonal tune-up of your HVAC system. A professional will be able to check that your air conditioning is functioning properly and provide advice on how to improve your filtration system.
